First Rides: Setting the Standard
Building confident, willing partners through patient, intentional first experiences under saddle
First Rides is a pivotal step in a horse’s development and will set the foundation of how they view under saddle work for the rest of their lives. At Menden Equestrian, we believe in responsibly backing young horses that have never been ridden with patience, intention, and a deep respect for the horse’s physical and mental development.
Our goal is not simply to get a horse under saddle—but to create a confident, willing partner who understands the job and enjoys it, prioritizing understanding over obedience.
This stage is about far more than getting on. It’s about establishing clarity, comfort, and a positive work ethic from the very first steps under saddle.

Purposeful, Horse-First Development
Our approach focuses on understanding, relaxation, and correct basics. Each horse is brought along at a pace that supports both mental confidence and physical soundness, ensuring early rides are calm, successful, and repeatable.
This phase is discipline agnostic.
Age-Appropriate, Intentional Work
Young horses are not small adults. Ride duration and workload are carefully managed to protect developing bodies and minds.
10–20 Minute Ride Times
Based on age and maturity. This will progress to longer rides for exposure and added experience as the horse becomes both physically and mentally capable of handling longer durations.
Light, Progressive Expectations
Building on success without overwhelming the young horse with demands beyond their current capability.
Positive, Confident Endings
Sessions that end on a positive, confident note—setting the horse up for success in the next ride.

Early Performance Priorities
From the very beginning, we focus on qualities that translate across all disciplines:
There is no drilling or pressure—only clear guidance and positive reinforcement.

The Result: A Willing, Soft Young Horse
When first rides are done correctly, they set the tone for the horse’s entire life. Our aim is to produce a young horse who is:
- Mentally confident and curious
- Soft in the body and receptive to the aids
- Willing to go forward without tension
- Prepared—physically and mentally—for future training
By prioritizing positive experiences from the very beginning, we create horses who are not only easier to train, but happier for years to come.
