Meet Archie, a 2018 Thoroughbred gelding whose story embodies the resilience, heart, and potential of the modern Off-Track Thoroughbred. Known on the track as Midnight Nightmare, Archie is anything but — he’s calm, kind, and incredibly willing, with all the qualities we look for in a sport horse partner.

Born in the spring of 2018, Archie just turned seven years old on May 7th. A true warhorse, he completed 37 starts during his racing career, earning over $110,000 before retiring sound in December of 2022. His pedigree is as classic as they come — tracing back to the legendary Nearco on both sides — and he carries that lineage with pride in both conformation and movement.

Now beginning his second career, Archie is in training here at Menden Equestrian, where he’ll be going through our full retraining program. But make no mistake — this guy isn’t starting from scratch. After a well-earned break, he’s come back into work with enthusiasm, and he’s the kind of horse that truly enjoys having a job. He’ll be ready for a new home soon, and we’re excited to see where he goes next.

What Makes Archie Special?

One of the standout qualities about Archie is just how sensible and steady he is. He’s one of the calmest, most level-headed Thoroughbreds we’ve had the pleasure of working with — a testament to both his character and his solid foundation.

Archie is:

• Easy for the vet and farrier

• Unfazed by dogs, music, farm noise, and crowds

• Happy to trail ride alone or in company

• A lovely mover with a naturally balanced canter

• Willing over fences, jumping full courses with scope and rhythm

• Responsive on the lunge, and enjoys attention and grooming

He's also beautifully built, with good bone and classic TB refinement. We fully expect him to vet well, and he’s currently sound and in regular work. That said, his body tells the story of a hardworking, successful racehorse — he’s got the marks of mileage, but also the mindset and maturity that come with experience.

What’s Next for Archie?

Over the next few weeks, Archie will continue his training with us as we refine his flatwork, strengthen his topline, and build confidence over fences. We’re especially excited to get him out on some hunter and eventing courses, where we think he’ll really shine. With movement like his, we may even explore dressage — he has the quality and willingness to go in any direction his future person wants to take him.
